Hold Still, A Thriller by Tim Adler

Hold Still CoverTim Adler is an entertainment and business journalist who also writes a darn good thriller. He joins us today to discuss his latest novel, HOLD STILL.

Show Notes from Tim Adler Interview

HOLD STILL is Tim’s third thriller, but the first to be traditionally published. He shares the reason for the change.

We discuss the setup for HOLD STILL, in which a woman snaps a picture of her husband, at the moment where he dies. The idea running through Tims’s mind when he conceived the story was MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS for the Instagram generation.

Tim has an extensive background as a journalist and we spend some time discussing the current state of the newspaper business.

Tim has also had success as a non-fiction author and shares stories from that part of his career, before we get into his reasons for turning to fiction.

The book takes place in Albania. Tim describes why he chose that country as a setting, and in a podcast first, shares some travel tips for  visitors to Albania.

From the Publisher:

Find Her, by Lisa Gardner

Find Her CoverNew York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner joins us in this episode of CrimeFiction.FM to discuss her new book, the 8th in her Detective D.D. Warren series, FIND HER.

FIND ME is an intricately plotted and tightly written thrill ride with a unique and complex protagonist in Flora Dane. As you’ll hear during the interview, I was unable to put the book down until I reached the end.

Lisa Gardner Interview Notes

Lisa shares the backstory of Flora Dane, who was the victim of a high-profile kidnapping.

We discuss some of the research Lisa did for FIND HER, which included interviews with the FBI’s Office of Victim Assistance as well as with the mother of a Kidnap victim who was returned to her family.

Detective D.D. Warren, a recurring character in many of Lisa’s books, plays a pivotal role in FIND HER.

We discuss Lisa’s writing process. She believes her best work during the process is the editing phase, which typically takes her three months.

Miraculously alive after her ordeal, Flora has spent the past five years reacquainting herself with the rhythms of normal life, working with her FBI victim advocate, Samuel Keynes. She has a mother who’s never stopped loving her, a brother who is scared of the person she’s become, and a bedroom wall covered with photos of other girls who’ve never made it home.

Flora Dane is reckless.

Warren is called to the scene of a crime—a dead man and the bound, naked woman who killed him—she learns that Flora has tangled with three other suspects since her return to society. Is Flora a victim or a vigilante? And with her firsthand knowledge of criminal behavior, could she hold the key to rescuing a missing college student whose abduction has rocked Boston? When Flora herself disappears, D.D. realizes a far more sinister predator is out there. One who’s determined that this time, Flora Dane will never escape. And now it is all up to D. D. At Bay, by John W. Mefford

Copy of Zero to $10,000 per month in 90 days (2)

Bestselling author John W. Mefford joins us in this first ever audio AND video episode of CrimeFiction.FM to discuss his new book, the first in his new Alex Trout thriller series, AT BAY.  You can scroll down to watch the video below and of course, our normal audio link for the podcast is above.

At Bay CoverThe interview portion of the show is exactly the same on both audio and video. The difference comes in at the end. The video ends when the interview is over, but the audio version continues for a few minutes beyond the point where John and I say goodbye.

Notes from the John W. Mefford Interview

John is a subscriber to the CrimeFiction.FM email list, and responded to a message I sent to the list last week asking if anyone was interested in doing a video interview. As you’ll see, John is comfortable doing video, perhaps because he’s been posting video of himself speaking directly to his readers on Facebook. He’s finding that to be a great way to communicate with his readers.  (See this link for the video he did using cards while his voice was under the weather.)

We discuss the opening scene for At Bay, in which FBI Agent Alex Trout wakes up in a hospital having lost her memory from a recent car accident.

As a parent, John understands the connection between a parent and a child, and uses that understanding to great effect in the book, where Alex learns that she has two children, but doesn’t recognize them.

We discuss the two other series that John writes, the Greed Series and the Booker series. He walks us through the themes explored by each series.

John published 6 1/2 titles (one was a novella) in the Booker series last year, and plans a similar publication schedule for his Alex Trout series in 2016.

From the Publisher:

John W. MeffordAlexandra Giordano never knew she had it so good. Until it was all gone in an instant.

As she begins her daunting quest to uncover the black spots on her memory, what she finds isn’t sweet or charming or even pleasant. And that’s when she begins to question everything, including herself.

Her work as a Special Agent for the FBI is only a distraction, serving as a mental metronome…anything to crank the gears of her feeble mind.

And then it happens—a bizarre, ritualistic murder. She loses herself in her work, fully immersed in the investigation. Unable to recall even her own kids, she’s somehow able to formulate coherent theories on what type of person could pull off such a sickening act.

As her mind slowly plugs a few memory gaps, her emotions are scrambled by the reality of her worlds colliding. And the resulting explosion tears her in two.

Can she pick up all the incendiary fragments to solve the twisted crime while she clings to some semblance of sanity?

One woman can only keep so much…AT Bay.

Where it Hurts, by Reed Farrel Coleman

Where it Hurts CoverNew York Times bestselling author Reed Farrel Coleman joins us in this episode of CrimeFiction.FM to discuss his new book, the first in his Gus Murphy series, WHERE IT HURTS.

Show Notes for Reed Farrel Coleman Interview

Reed shares the story behind WHERE IT HURTS and how a real-life scandal provided an inspiration for the story while he was creating the character of Gus Murphy for the new series.

Reed enjoys taking the conceits and tropes of private eye fiction and turning them on their ear, which is exactly what he’s done with the character of Gus Murphy.

We discuss the character of Tommy Delcamino, who spends little time “on screen” in WHERE IT HURTS, but plays a pivotal role in the story.  “I don’t believe in minor characters in my stories,” was Reed’s response when I asked him about Tommy.

Reed has two other series characters that he’s created, as well as taking over the Jesse Stone franchise from the estate of the legendary Robert Parker. We discuss each series.

There is an audiobook version of WHERE IT HURTS available for free with a Trial of the Audible.com service.

From the Publisher:

Reed Farrel ColemanGus Murphy thought he had the world all figured out. A retired Suffolk County cop, Gus had everything a man could want: a great marriage, two kids, a nice house, and the rest of his life ahead of him. But when tragedy strikes, his life is thrown into complete disarray. In the course of a single deadly moment, his family is blown apart and he is transformed from a man who believes he understands everything into a man who understands nothing.

Divorced and working as a courtesy van driver for the run-down hotel in which he has a room, Gus has settled into a mindless, soulless routine that barely keeps his grief at arm’s length. But Gus’s comfortable waking trance comes to an end when ex-con Tommy Delcamino asks him for help. Four months earlier, Tommy’s son T.J.’s battered body was discovered in a wooded lot, yet the Suffolk County PD doesn’t seem interested in pursuing the killers. In desperation, Tommy seeks out the only cop he ever trusted—Gus Murphy.

Gus reluctantly agrees to see what he can uncover. As he begins to sweep away the layers of dust that have collected over the case during the intervening months, Gus finds that Tommy was telling the truth. It seems that everyone involved with the late T.J Delcamino—from his best friend, to a gang enforcer, to a mafia capo, and even the police—has something to hide, and all are willing to go to extreme lengths to keep it hidden. It’s a dangerous favor Gus has taken on as he claws his way back to take a place among the living, while searching through the sewers for a killer.
